Install Step 9

If you are wallpapering an entire room, please realize that the pattern is not going to match perfectly when it comes back together. So choose a starting point that is the least conspicuous so that the eye is not drawn to the unmatched corner.

Lift off the excess paper you have just trimmed away. Wipe away the paste that is left on the ceiling and baseboards. Go paste the next strip and conduct the above process again.

When the paper is securely in place, use your straight edge to position the placement of the razor blade to precisely trim off the edge on the top and the bottom of the strip that has now been installed on the wall.

Install Step 6

Butt the edges of the paper tightly together. Do not overlap and do not leave a gap. Once your wallpaper is in position, gently smooth out any air bubbles or paste bubbles, do not press to hard. As you smooth out the paper wipe it down with a sponge at the same time. The damp surface makes your straight edge glide smoothly over it. Plus you want your work table and the wall clean at all times. Tidy is the name of the game.

Fold the paper back onto itself (this is called booking). Let the paper rest for about 2 minutes before you install it on the wall.

You will also need a tape measure and a 4’ level as well as a bullet (12”) level. You do not want the wallpaper pattern to slide down a wall. You want each piece to be hung straight, hence start your installation with a pencil mark on the wall that has been made with the level so you know that you are starting straight. Double check your plumb about every three strips and correct if necessary for straight installation.

You need a table that is at least 30” wide and 5’ long so that you can use a paint roller to put the adhesive on the back of the wallpaper. You will need wallpaper paste. We recommend and sell Roman’s 880 adhesive (also available at Lowe’s stores) in 1 gallon or 5 gallon buckets. You will need scissors, an Exacto razor knife, a smoother, a 5” wide straight edge, a seam roller, and a sponge and a bucket of fresh water.
